VoD tips: When fire meets water

«Why can’t I just be a good daughter?» asks fiery Ember at one point in the film. Because when she tries to save her immigrant parents’ shop from closing down, she’s forced to rely on the help of relaxed water-man Wade. And that’s how these two normally hostile elements discover unexpected qualities in each other. – A fun, colourful and fast-paced Pixar flick for all ages. Perfect family entertainment.

After his first Justice League adventure, Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) is frustrated by the fact that his alter ego The Flash is only ever called on to clean up after Bruce Wayne a.k.a Batman (Ben Affleck). To prevent the death of his mother, he opens the gateway to the multiverse, where he not only encounters a younger version of himself, but also an unfamiliar Batman and Supergirl. – Action comic enriched with plenty of DC comic nostalgia. Fans love it.

Even though the real Jann Mardenborough was never a Formula 1 champion, it’s still remarkable that the 20-year-old gamer with a penchant for a motor-racing game (Archie Madekwe) suddenly gets the chance to sit behind the wheel of a real racing car. And make the leap from bedroom to professional circuit within just a few months. – The «Rocky»-style underdog story is skilfully staged by Neill Blomkamp and draws you in from the very first minute.

In Wes Anderson’s latest comedy, a gathering of a group of stargazers is interrupted when the Junior Stargazer convention witnesses an event that will change the world once and for all. Did someone mention an alien? – Even the sets and the ambience are fascinating, right from the start. The cast is outstanding too. But it’s Anderson fans particularly that can’t get enough of his latest creation.

In this Swiss comedy featuring a couple whose relationship has long been strained, the wife invites the tenants who live above them round for drinks. Having had to put up with their newly-in-love neighbours’ constant loud sex hasn’t exactly helped Anna’s (Ursina Lardi) and Thomas’s (Roeland Wiesnekker) own relationship. But drinks are followed by a dessert that’s more than they bargained for. – A funny relationship caper that doesn’t hold back.

Halloween scarecrows

In the horror flick «Insidious: The Red Door» (VoD launch: 5 October 2023), demons from the past catch up with the Lambert family ten years on, just as their son Dalton starts university. Patrick Wilson not only stars in this fifth chapter of «Insidious», but also makes his directing debut.
