1. Always Be My Maybe (2019)
A must-see movie to stream on Valentine’s Day
Plot: In their childhood, Sasha (Ali Wong) and her best friend Marcus (Randall Park) were inseparable. But after an argument, the two outsiders cut off all contact. But as fate would have it, fifteen years later they happen to meet by chance in San Francisco.
The old feelings from their youth don’t seem to have faded quite yet, but then none other than Hollywood favorite Keanu Reeves enters the fray, and Marcus has to do everything in his power to win back Sasha’s heart. It’s time to make his move.
Worth watching because: Keanu Reeves delivers lots of truly hilarious scenes in this refreshing rom-com featuring stand-up comedian Ali Wong and Randall Park, and he proves yet again that he’s more than just an action hero.
2. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Elaborately staged rom-com
Plot: «Crazy Rich Asians» is a heartwarming romantic comedy based on the novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan. It tells the story of a young, successful professor from New York (Constance Wu) who is supposed to be accompanying her partner Nick (Henry Golding) to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore, but then discovers that Nick’s family is one of the wealthiest in Singapore.
When she arrives in the metropolis, she experiences the glamorous lifestyle of the super-rich for the first time – but also meets Nick’s mother Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh), who goes out of her way to make Rachel’s life difficult.
Worth watching because: this rom-com, with its wonderfully flamboyant production and bubbly characters, will really touch your heart, making it the perfect choice for Valentine’s Day. It’s no surprise that it shot right to the top of the movie charts as soon as it was released in the USA.
3. Our Souls at Night (2017)
Romance starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda
Plot: «Our Souls at Night» is based on a novel about unexpected love and is told with great sensitivity. In this drama directed by Ritesh Batra, two neighbors who’ve each lost their spouses grow closer.
The two lead characters are in their 70s and have lived in the same city for decades, but they know hardly anything about each other. One night when Addie (Jane Fonda) knocks on Louis’s door (Robert Redford) and asks if she can spend the nights with him to help quell her loneliness, it’s all set to change. Their nighttime conversations about their lives past and present soon create a close bond between them.
Worth watching because: this slowly evolving love story with its serene narrative style doesn’t rely on exaggerated Hollywood pomp or kitsch – and the performances of Jane Fonda and Robert Redford really stand out brightly because of this
4. Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in starring roles
Plot: Cal ((Steve Carell) is a father of three who has a decent job, lives in a big house and... is facing the collapse of his 25-year marriage. When his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) reveals to him during a candlelit dinner that she cheated on him with a work colleague, he’s stunned. A short time later, he visits a bar where he loudly laments his pitiful situation. This brings him to the attention of the womanizer and heartthrob Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling).
As the blonde pretty boy can’t stand hearing Cal’s pitiful laments about his plight a second longer, he spontaneously offers to teach him how to reinvent himself as a desirable bachelor. Unfortunately, Jacob reckoned without Cal’s daughter (Emma Stone), who makes him vigorously question his own outlook on life.
Worth watching because: this multilayered rom-com is captivating from start to finish with its excellent cast, numerous plot twists, funny dialog, wonderfully entertaining ending and the strong on-screen chemistry that we’ve come to expect between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
5. The Notebook (2004)
Bittersweet movie based on a bestselling novel
Plot: This movie also features Ryan Gosling in the lead role. This time he appears alongside Rachel McAdams, who plays the role of Allie, a teenager who moves to Seabrook in North Carolina to spend the summer with her family in the 1940s. At a carnival, she meets the worker Noah (Ryan Gosling) and falls head over heels in love with him at first sight. They spend a single passionate summer together before class differences and the Second World War drive the two lovers apart. Decades later, Allie and Noah meet again...
Worth watching because: this bittersweet, romantic drama manages to reaffirm the belief in everlasting love – and there won’t be a dry eye in the house.
