From 1 to 2.5 Gbit/s – Become a speed champion with Sunrise

Slow downloads, interrupted video conferences, stuttering online games, sluggish movies and jerky conversations – Internet connections that are too slow are a nuisance. Homes outside the cities are affected most. Sunrise, the only provider to service more than 95% of Swiss households with high-speed Internet of 1 Gbit/s and more, is continuing to lead the way with its hybrid fibre-optic cable network (HFC). From the end of August, 80% of all households connected to the Internet via the Sunrise HFC network will be able to benefit from an upgrade of their Internet speed from 1 to 2.5 Gbit/s (gigabits per second).

Did you know that in the last two years alone, the Sunrise fixed-line data volume has grown by around 30%? 92% of the Swiss population uses the Internet daily or almost daily. It’s not just smartphones, laptops, PCs and tablets that are connected to the Internet at home1), smart TVs, game consoles, e-readers and smart watches, etc. are now increasingly being connected too. The average Swiss person uses the Internet for 5.6 hours each day2). And the demand for fast and reliable Internet continues to grow.

Your customer experience when the Internet speed increases from 1 Gbit/s to 2.5 Gbit/s

Faster down- and uploads

  • Downloads: Large files, such as films or software updates, are downloaded faster. It takes about 80 seconds to download a 10 GB file at 1 Gbit/s, while it takes less than half the time at 2.5 Gbit/s, around 32 seconds.

Improved streaming quality

  • 4K and 8K streaming: Streaming 4K or 8K videos is effortless at 2.5 Gbit/s and you won’t experience any buffering or waiting times. And several high-quality streams can run at the same time.

  • Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) benefit from reduced delays and higher data rates, improving the user experience.

Work from home more efficiently:

  • Video conferences are becoming more stable and clearer, which makes working in your home office (remote working) or online meetings more pleasant. Faster Internet is particularly helpful if, for example, the parents in the household work from home and the kids are playing games online.

Smart-home integration

  • Internet of Things (IoT) devices: Thanks to the higher bandwidth, a larger number of smart-home devices (sensors, household appliances, TVs, game consoles, PCs, laptops, speakers, etc.) are supported without sacrificing network performance.

Multiple users and devices

  • Higher Internet speed ensures the connection is fast enough for all the Internet users and devices in the household.

Sunrise has a unique mix of technologies (copper, hybrid fibre-coax HFC, fibre optics, 5G network) both from its own networks and access to partner networks. Sunrise is the only provider to supply more than 95% of Swiss households with home-broadband offers at speeds of 1 Gbit/s (including 5G network).

«Fast and reliable Internet is a basic need, not only in cities, but throughout Switzerland. That’s why we’re more than doubling the Internet speed on our fibre-optic cable network, and around 80% of Swiss households are connected to it. Our customers will enjoy significantly higher performance, at no extra cost. This puts us a big step ahead of the competition and means we can continue driving digital development with our connectivity – in all regions of Switzerland,» says André Krause, Sunrise CEO, to sum up the broadband campaign.

With this increase in high-speed Internet from 1 Gbit/s to 2.5 Gbit/s on the HFC network, Sunrise is further extending its lead as a provider. And this is something that’s shown clearly by a comparison of broadband coverage (without 5G network):

Customers who are connected to the HFC network and currently surf at 1 Gbit/s will benefit from a significantly better Internet experience with the upgrade to 2.5 Gbits/s – without having to pay more for their subscription. But it’s important for customers to have the right equipment to be able to enjoy the maximum-speed experience.

To get the most out of an Internet-speed increase the customer’s devices need to support that higher speed. So please check whether the following devices support 2.5 Gbit/s:

  • Router and modem

  • Network cables and network adapters for each device

  • End devices (compatible hardware / current drivers)

  • Multi-gigabit switch (for larger networks)

To ensure Sunrise Internet customers can benefit from high-speed Internet performance seamlessly throughout their home via an ultra-fast and stable Wi-Fi connection, Sunrise will also be sending them a free Smart Wi-Fi extender. This includes support from a specialised team of Wi-Fi experts, who are there to offer the right support for any connectivity problems in the home.
