Network slicing is a type of mobile private network (MPN) and is based on the 5G mobile-communications standard. MPN slicing makes it possible to split a physical mobile network into multiple virtual-network segments, known as «slices». These exclusively reserved slices are configured for different applications or specific user groups and provide reliable private data connections without any loss of network quality or availability – regardless of the public-network load.
MPN slicing uses the existing Sunrise 5G infrastructure. Slicing is the process of dividing a physical 5G network into virtual segments. Multiple private slices can then be assigned to different applications or user groups on the same public network. Each slice is independent and tailored to the specific requirements of the relevant application. These slices are configured individually in terms of speed, latency, capacity and security. The isolation of the individual slices prevents other slices or interference factors from affecting a segment’s performance and stability. As a result, users benefit from a private 5G network.

MPN slicing allows companies to utilise exclusively reserved network slices within the public Sunrise 5G mobile network right across Switzerland. This provides guaranteed resources, ideal for applications that require a defined bandwidth, low latency or large capacity for lots of devices. The network resources are guaranteed to be available independently of the other users of the 5G network. The required specifications are defined and reserved for the respective application with an individual service level agreement (SLA).
High reliability and security
MPN separates the virtual network segments from one another in a logical way so that each slice is configured individually, used in isolation and managed independently. This means that each company benefits from its own separate network properties that can be used exclusively for its own applications. Not only does this increase network stability, but it also minimises the risk of overloading through other participants. Another security feature is the dedicated SIM cards that are only authorised for this slice. The Sunrise Security Operations Centre (SOC) also routinely and successfully fends off cyberattacks on the Sunrise network 24/7.
Scalability and flexibility
MPN slicing enables companies to adapt their network resources as required. Whether they need high bandwidth for data-sensitive applications or low latency for real-time applications, the slice can be adapted dynamically to their evolving requirements, including with regard to locations and the duration of the network resources required.
No need to build your own infrastructure
A major advantage of MPN slicing is that companies don’t have to build their own infrastructure for private networks and therefore only need to make minor investments. They rely on the existing Sunrise 5G infrastructure, which not only saves costs, but also enables fast and reliable deployment.
When used in combination with edge computing, in which the computing and storage capacities for applications along with parts of the core network are physically located as close as possible to the end devices and users, the latency times can be reduced even more. This allows data processing to take place nearly in real time.
