PRECISE CONSTRUCTION-SITE MONITORING WITH IoT AND AI (AIoT)
avisec’s connected cameras offer customers intelligent monitoring systems. With IoT connectivity from Sunrise Business, AI-based image data showing the progress of construction work simplifies more than just the material logistics.
Construction-site inspections in person on the ground, missing materials or complicated measurements all cost time and money. avisec ag is a leading company specialising in image-based construction-site monitoring, precise measurement methods that use image data, and the operation of IoT-based crane cameras. The SME currently operates around 1,000 cameras on more than 500 construction sites. Its core services include a custom-developed cloud solution with a customer portal in which image data can be stored, processed and analysed using artificial intelligence (AI). This allows construction managers to access detailed information at any time to continuously track and monitor how the construction work is actually progressing – and, most importantly, they can do it remotely. Founded in 2009, the company has 14 employees and also offers services for panoramic webcams, time-lapse recordings or long-term nature monitoring (e.g. glaciers using stand-alone cameras).
Cameras mounted on cranes record individual images of the construction site constantly from different angles. To record and transmit the image data, avisec previously used IoT SIM cards from a number of providers and issued them to its customers, but it caused several challenges. Firstly, connectivity wasn’t always guaranteed at every construction site, and they couldn’t rely on an uninterrupted data flow to the avisec cloud application. Secondly, this made it impossible to manage all the connections centrally – which SIM card is currently being used at which construction site? Is it providing data? Can it be deactivated now?
Ultimately, they had to perform lots of manual steps to manage the cards and cameras – and that also caused drawbacks for the end customers: «It wasn’t until they received the bill that our customers realised just how much their connection had cost,» says Daniel Bärtschi, founder and owner of avisec.
At least two cameras mounted on a crane generate individual images at regular intervals and transmit these images automatically to the avisec cloud application, where they’re enhanced using dedicated image-analysis algorithms, and made available to customers for further processing and analysis. This allows a customer to respond quickly if any defects are identified.
Nowadays, avisec relies almost exclusively on SIM cards and the connectivity provided by Sunrise Business. Depending on the specific application, individual images are recorded and transmitted every 20 seconds or every few minutes. Simple solutions involving surveillance cameras require a data volume of around 5 to 10 GB a month, but a higher resolution may require a volume of 60 or 70 GB.
Although customers can choose to use their own cameras and SIM cards to transmit the image data to the avisec cloud application, the best option is to use the avisec-recommended cameras that come preconfigured with the IoT SIM cards from Sunrise Business and can be managed via the Connectivity Management Platform (CMP).
«Image-based monitoring has the potential to generate huge savings on construction projects,» says Bärtschi, based on his host of experience. «While the architects’ plans merely portray the intended design, the camera images show what’s actually happening on the construction site.» They can show any defects like an incorrectly laid pipe quickly, so they can be corrected promptly before they’re set in concrete.
The IoT connectivity and Connectivity Management Platform (CMP) from Sunrise Business enable avisec to offer its customers a complete monitoring service – this Monitoring-as-a-Service provides unrivalled transparency in terms of connectivity and rate plans. «Our customers can access all the operational data in real time and, if they need to, they can configure it, pause it, adjust the rate plan and the like,» explains Bärtschi.
The CMP also replaces Excel documentation: all the relevant data can be retrieved, with some of it displayed on dashboards. As a central management platform, the Sunrise Connectivity Management Platform is a key element in all the services that avisec provides its current and future customers – and thus forms the basis to successfully scale the company.
The AIoT-based camera images already generate enormous amounts of data to depict what’s actually happening on the construction site, overlay the camera images on CAD plans in the portal and compare them.
Future plans see high-resolution cameras being networked and benefitting from 5G technology. The next releases of the 5G standard and the appropriate hardware, especially the router, will enable the data to be processed and transmitted even more efficiently. Sunrise Business is at the forefront of 5G development and helps avisec use the latest IoT technologies with its extensive expertise so it can expand its Monitoring-as-a-Service business model.
